Understanding Your Procedure Results: Definitions

As a convenience, patients scheduled for a routine screening colonoscopy will not be required to schedule an office visit to review the results of their procedure if the findings are essentially normal. If no cancerous or pre-cancerous polyps or growths are found, your results may be communicated to you by mail. If no polyps were removed during your procedure you should receive your results within 1 week of your procedure. Because it can take up to 2 weeks for pathology results to be received, if your doctor removed any polyps during your procedure you may not receive your letter for 2-3 weeks. If you receive your results by mail, this means there were no findings requiring immediate follow up or cause for concern. If polyps were removed your letter will indicate the type of polyp(s) found. More information of the types of polyps that might be found during a colonoscopy may be found in the document provided below. While we have implemented this process for notifying patients of results as a convience to our patients who may find it difficult to return to the office for another appointment please know that our physicians are ALWAYS more than happy to meet with you discuss any finding and answer any questions you may have following your procedure so if you wish to discuss your results with your doctor please do not hesitate to request an appointment.

Insurance and Billing

Our practice participates with most insurance plans, but as the complexity of the healthcare marketplace increases, we encourage patients to contact their insurance carriers directly with any questions about coverage and benefits.

Patients enrolled in high deductible health plans may bear financial responsibility for some or all of the services they receive. Our billing staff will contact your insurance carrier directly to establish financial responsibility and will work with you in advance of your procedure to establish payment arrangements. While current healthcare legislation requires screening colonoscopies to be fully covered by insurance (without charges being applied to the patient's deductible), insurance companies differ with regard to what they consider to be a true screening colonoscopy. Patients with a familiy history of colon cancer or a personal history of colon polyps, or patients experiencing any gastrointestinal symptoms prior to their procedure should contact their insurance company to clarify their benefits. Please access the document link provided below for more information on Screening Colonoscopies:

What To Expect

Being well-prepared for your appointment will ensure that the doctor has all of the needed information to provide the best possible care for you. It will also help alleviate any unnecessary anxiety you may be feeling prior to your first appointment. Educate yourself on your symptoms by reviewing the content on this website. Also, take some time to review our staff page and familiarize yourself with the doctors. We look forward to your first visit.

Our office has implemented and electronic check in process. You will be presented with a small tablet upon arrival. Through this tablet you will review demographic and insurance information we already have on file to ensure it is correct and will be given the opportunity to correct or provide new information. These tables are easy to use, but if you do not feel comfortable using this technology when you are in the office please let one of our receptionists know so they can assist you. You will also be asked to present your current insurance card at every visit.

Most visits will start with one of our nurses or medical assistants collecting vital statistics and other information. In many cases our doctors are assisted by a Physician Assistant (PA), who may conduct a portion of your exam prior to your being seen by the physician.

Patients for whom an endoscoping procedure is indicated will meet with a scheduler to get their procedure booked before leaving the office. Procedures may be scheduled in our office, at Mary Washington Hospital or at the Surgi-Center of Central Virginia. The location of your procedure will be selected based upon insurance requirements as well as certain clinical considerations such as age, body mass index, and other risk factors.
